What is AI search tracking?

AI search tracking is the regular measurement of where your business appears in AI-generated search answers. A sensible setup combines Google Search Console visibility, repeatable customer questions, website analytics and real enquiry data. It shows patterns over time; it cannot promise one fixed “AI ranking” because answers change by question, place and user.

Start with Google's AI visibility report

Google introduced dedicated Search Generative AI performance reports in Search Console so website owners can see when their pages appear in generative search features. The report covers impressions, the pages shown, countries, devices and dates. That gives you a proper starting point for Google visibility rather than a screenshot from one search.

Look for which service pages keep appearing and which important pages are absent. Compare the pattern month by month. A single busy day can be noise; a service page gaining steady visibility is more useful. The report covers Google's own AI search features, not every answer given by ChatGPT, Perplexity or other tools, so it is one part of the picture.

Do not confuse an impression with a customer

An impression means Google showed your page within an AI feature. It does not mean somebody read the answer, clicked through or rang you. That is still helpful evidence, but it sits near the top of the journey.

Pair visibility with ordinary Search Console clicks and your website analytics. Watch the landing pages people reach, whether they view a service or pricing page, and whether they complete a form or tap the phone link. Some AI tools may appear as referral traffic. Others may send no visit at all because the answer was read inside the tool. That is why a neat visibility graph on its own is not a result.

Track the questions a real customer asks

AI answers vary with wording, location, account history and fresh information. Testing random prompts each month tells you very little. Instead, choose five to ten questions that match genuine buying decisions, then keep the wording steady. A Leeds tradesperson might track questions about trusted local firms, prices, service areas and how quickly a job can be done.

Record four things: whether your business is named, whether your website is linked, whether the description is accurate, and which competitors or directories appear instead. Repeat the same check monthly across the tools your customers are likely to use. Our plain-English AI SEO guide explains the website and reputation signals that make a business easier to understand and verify.

Measure the work that supports every kind of search

Do not chase AI mentions with strange markup, hundreds of thin articles or a paid dashboard that hides how its score is made. The useful jobs are less exciting: clear service pages, accurate contact details, genuine reviews, useful answers, structured data, a current sitemap and independent mentions from trustworthy sources.

Those improvements also support ordinary SEO and local search. That matters because Google still sends people through classic results, maps and local listings as well as AI features. A sound page should help a person choose you even if the route changes.

A simple monthly AI search tracking routine

  1. Export the month's Google AI visibility data from Search Console.
  2. Note the pages gaining or losing consistent impressions.
  3. Run the same five to ten customer questions across your chosen AI tools.
  4. Check links, descriptions, competitor mentions and obvious factual errors.
  5. Compare website visits, calls and forms with the previous month.
  6. Choose one useful fix, then measure again before changing everything else.

Keep the record simple. A spreadsheet with the question, tool, date, mention, link and notes is enough for most small businesses. If the same weakness appears repeatedly — an old address, a missing service page or a competitor cited from a strong directory — you have a clear job to do.

Google AI Overviews and other answer tools are changing how people discover businesses, but the commercial test has not changed: can the right person find you, trust what they see and take the next step?
