What is AI SEO for a small business?

AI SEO is the work that helps tools such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity understand, mention and cite your business. It combines ordinary SEO with clear answers, consistent business details, structured data and credible mentions elsewhere. There is no magic submission button, and nobody can guarantee a recommendation.

AI SEO does not replace ordinary SEO

Search engines and AI answer tools still need to find, read and trust your website. If important pages are slow, hidden, thin or missing from the index, dressing the copy up with a few AI phrases will not rescue them. The foundation is still a technically sound site with useful service pages, sensible headings and accurate business information.

Google's own guidance says there are no special extra requirements for appearing in its AI features beyond the normal search fundamentals. That is refreshingly boring. Start with a proper SEO foundation, then make the information easier for answer tools to extract and verify. Anyone selling an overnight “ChatGPT ranking” is selling certainty they do not control.

Start with a website that machines can read

Your key information should exist as normal text on the page, not only inside an image, animation or downloadable brochure. Give each main service a clear page. Use one descriptive H1, useful H2s, short paragraphs and links that show how related pages fit together. Keep the mobile version quick and straightforward.

Check that your sitemap is current, important pages are indexable and your robots settings are not blocking the search crawlers you actually want. OpenAI publishes a list of its web crawlers, while Google explains how its AI search features use indexed pages. You do not need to understand every line of code, but whoever looks after your site should be able to explain what is allowed and why.

Make your business easy to verify

An answer tool should not have to guess whether two slightly different business listings describe the same company. Use the same business name, phone number, service description and website address wherever they appear. Keep your Google Business Profile, Bing presence, social profiles and genuine directory listings accurate.

Structured data can label your organisation, services, location and articles in a machine-readable way. It does not guarantee a mention, but it removes needless ambiguity. Real reviews and independent mentions also help establish that the business exists beyond its own sales copy. The same tidy groundwork supports local Google visibility, so the effort is not wasted if AI search changes again next month.

Write answers worth quoting

Think about the questions a customer asks before ringing: what does it cost, who is it for, how long does it take, what is included and what could go wrong? Put direct, honest answers near the top of the relevant page. Then add the detail underneath. A plain answer is useful to a person and easy for a machine to quote without mangling it.

Avoid pumping out dozens of vague AI-written posts. One specific page with real prices, a clear process, named limitations and original photographs is more useful than ten articles that say very little. Refresh old information when it changes. Our guide to Google AI Overviews explains why answer-first sections matter even when the searcher stays on Google.

How to check whether AI SEO is working

There is no universal “position one” in an AI answer. Results can change with the wording, location, account and date. Use a small, repeatable check instead:

  1. Write down five to ten questions a genuine buyer might ask.
  2. Test the same wording in ChatGPT, Google, Gemini and Perplexity.
  3. Record whether your business is mentioned, linked and described accurately.
  4. Note which competitors and third-party sources appear instead.
  5. Repeat the check monthly without changing the questions.

Also watch enquiry quality, branded searches and referrals from AI tools in your analytics. A mention with no click can still put your name on a shortlist, but it is not the same as a lead. Measure calls, forms and bookings rather than celebrating a dashboard score nobody outside the software company understands.

AI SEO is mostly good web practice with the waffle taken out: be crawlable, specific, consistent and genuinely useful. If your current site makes that difficult, see how we build websites for Leeds businesses. If the site is sound but nobody can find it, the next job is strengthening the search and reputation signals around it. No messing about, and no promises a platform can change tomorrow.
